A graphic below is how the Berkeley Phoenix House - Revision 5 - was proposed May 13, 2010.  This plan was a direct result of discussions & representations made at an April 2010 ZAB hearing.  The appellants disapproved of revision 5.

Features of the Green Roof can be seen, including solar panels and live vegetation. The small area between the chimney and roof access is for a roof top vegetable garden.(Note: interior roof access feature at point A to be removed per ZAB - May 13.)

A Green Roof will: Reduce heat island effect, reduce storm water runoff, add a layer of insulation to roofs, provide urban wildlife habitats, provide fire protection, and reduce energy consumption.  For more information on Green Roofs, go the the
Office of Energy & Sustainable Development, City of Berkeley or Anderson Anderson Architecture, San Francisco

View is from SW looking NE.  The roof structure at A had been slightly enlarged to give neighbors additional privacy, with frosted glass on the east and south sides.  The structure would also screen views from deck E to the vegetable garden area.    Representations made at an April meeting had led us to propose this option in Plan 5, which the appellants rejected.  The structure was removed in version 6.
